Motorcycle Racing Leathers: Apparel for the asphalt!

Motorcycle racing leathers are designed for one thing: protection.

As nice as they look, they exist primarily to shield bikers from the weather and the road. Wind and rain slamming into your body at 60+ mph is hardly pleasant, and even the best motorcycle rider is likely to wipe out occasionally.

When given a choice between road rash and a damaged jacket, any biker will pick a bruised leather over a bruised skin every time.

Protect your hide with these hides

Biker leather jackets are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to protective biker clothing. Riders who race motorcycles are particularly in need of quality leathers, from chaps and pants to jackets. Often these items are worn in combination with tough denim, because racing or not, it's all about protection.

Naked and loving it

The best motorcycle racing leathers are made of what's called "naked leather" -- cowhide that's been dyed but not otherwise processed beyond the tanning phase. This results in thick, supple leather with a prominent grain that won't crack and peel as it ages. You aren't likely to find suede or lambskin jackets among those who race motorcycles-they're beautiful, but not tough enough for bikers.

Full-body suits, anyone?

If a jacket just isn't enough, some retailers offer full-body racing suits that'll cover you literally from head to toe. Depending on your size, these leathers can cost you anywhere from $500-$1000.

Are they worth it? It depends on how often you race motorcycles, and under what conditions. A diehard street biker wouldn't be caught dead in these multicolored wonders, but for a rider who makes his or her living on a motorcycle, they're often standard equipment.
